Almost every earplug blocks sound well enough. The difference only shows up after a couple of hours: one presses, another slides out, and the third you take out without even thinking about it. We bought twenty pairs and wore them for ten weeks. Here is the order.

Test winner, and the best value in the field. The only pair our testers did not take out overnight, side sleeping included: the plug sits inside the ear canal and never presses against the pillow.

An earplug that blocks 30 dB in a lab but comes out after an hour blocks zero decibels for the rest of the night.
So we rated comfort after two hours and whether they stay in before the number on the box. Of the twenty pairs, ten blocked sound genuinely well and still ended up on the nightstand before the test was over.
And to be straight about it: no earplug makes silence. Around 24 dB takes loud snoring down to the level of a refrigerator running. Enough to fall asleep. Not enough to stop hearing it.
Yes. These plugs quiet everything by roughly the same amount and do not let high tones through selectively. You hear the alarm because it is loud and close, not because a filter passes it better.
Comfortable on your side too, and that is exactly where almost everything else fails.

The right earplug is not the one that blocks most. It is the one still in your ear in the morning.
The tapered body with two flanges closes flush with the ear, with no protruding stem. Models with a stem or a ring came out overnight when testers slept on their side. These did not.
24 dB attenuation to the European standard EN 352-2. A partner’s snoring dropped to the background level where testers fell asleep, without vanishing entirely. That is what a passive plug actually does.
Up to 100 uses, washable in mild soapy water, aluminum case included. With daily use the cost per night falls to a few cents.
Ten weeks of wear. Still the same pair.

See our #1 ›We bought twenty pairs at retail and wore them for ten weeks: nights with and without snoring, an open-plan office, travel. We logged which pair came out partway through and which was still in by morning. None of them came from a manufacturer.
The winner’s attenuation was measured by an independent German laboratory to EN 352-2: 24 dB overall, of which 24 dB at high tones, 21 dB at mid and 19 dB at low. It takes most off the high end. There is no electronics in it: it lowers the volume, it does not close the ear. Results vary from person to person and depend on how you insert them.
